Space Transportation System mission 134 (STS-134) lifted off on May 16, 2011 from Kennedy Space Center.
This is Space Shuttle Endeavour's final flight and Endeavour delivered the
Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to the International Space Station (ISS). AMS was installed on the ISS on May 19, 2011 and was activated sending data to the ground. It may take years for scientists to analyze and understand AMS findings.
AMS is the world's most sensitive space bound particle
detector and will be one of the most exciting experiments on ISS! AMS creation and development was lead by Nobel
laureate Professor Samuel Ting. Particle
detectors on earth cannot directly study charged particles from outer space because the 60 miles of earth's atmosphere absorbs, and protects us, from charged
particles. Scientist are looking for anti mater or dark energy. AMS will unlock many of the
mysteries of how the universe works, right in our life time!! We live in an exciting time of discovery. The physics grand unification theory has not been found, current math models of the universe do not work, we know that we do not know, and AMS will help with the quest of understanding our universe!
